In honor of Veterans Week at Cypress College, the Veterans Resource Center will host a Veterans Carnival on Wednesday, Nov. 19, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
The event serves as an appreciation for veteran students here at Cypress and as a thank you for their service. It allows them and others to come together as a community. Families of the veteran students also have the opportunity to join and spend time together with their loved ones.
Nick Gutierrez, the student services coordinator for the VRC, brought forward the idea of the Veterans Carnival.
“How about instead of a barbecue, we do something really big?” Gutierrez said, “Something that really does say thank you.”
Sarai Davalos, a Cypress student who served in the U.S. Navy, shared her thoughts on the carnival. “Aside from being a veteran, I am a mother to two boys,” she said, “so having them involved in my community and what makes me comfortable is extra special.”
The Veterans Resource Center is also a place for veterans to find support and a place for themselves. It allows the veteran students to find themselves and form bonds with others who can understand and want to help them.
“Being here [Veterans Resource Center] made me identify my passion,” Davalos said. “For helping others and encouraging others.”
This will be the third Veterans Carnival and will be located outside of the Veterans Resource Center. It will include games, prizes, and food. For more information, visit the Veterans Resource Center on campus.
