Having trouble deciding on lunch? Try Teriyaki Grill Monkey Wave.
Teriyaki Grill Monkey Wave, 5721 Lincoln Ave. #F, is a small restaurant that serves Japanese style food located down the street from Cypress College.
Their menu offers food like Chicken Katsu Curry, California Rolls, and even $2 hamburgers. According to their site, “Our chefs prepare every dish with care to ensure our customers enjoy the best dining experience possible. Casual, everyday style food made from fresh, natural ingredients from local farms makes our menu reminiscent of Mom’s home cooking.”
Don’t know what to try? Their website suggests the “Monkey Wave Special… Enjoy a little bit of everything on our menu.” The Monkey Wave special contains chicken and beef teriyaki, karaage (Japanese fried chicken), salad and macaroni salad.
“Their beef bowls are marinated to perfection, their salmon flakes in the monkey wave special are delicious,” said Mike Alcoran, Media Arts major and frequent goer to Monkey Wave. “And their service is extremely courteous!”
Mike also confessed that he goes there every week. “It’s that good!”
According to yelp.com, Monkey Wave has 48 reviews with an overall rating of four out of five stars.
Reviews on Yelp are very positive and customers are generally happy with the service. In a phone interview, Maynard Manalac, server since opening, said ”Most customers are pretty satisfied with service. We are pretty much known for our customer and homemade Japanese food.”
When asked how many Cypress College students visit Monkey Wave, he said, “Only about two to three Cypress College students come a week.” He also mentioned that those Cypress College students were mostly his friends that try to spread the word about Monkey Wave.
When asked if they can provide any special discounts for Cychron readers, Maynard said, “The only thing I can do for students plates with free soda. We do have a happy hour from eleven to two, which is you buy a plate and get a free soda. Other then that, that’s all I can do, sorry.”
Business is slow right now due to the holidays, according to Maynard. He also said that they receive about fifty or sixty customers a day.
Teriyaki Grill Monkey Wave is open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday. They accept cash and card. They also offer free wi-fi.
