The spring semester at Cypress College is in full swing, and so are the sports on campus. The college has always been competitive across all sports and that is no different in 2020.
The 5-time state champion Cypress baseball team has started the year 10-2, with their most convincing win coming against LA Pierce, racking up 22 runs and holding the opponents to 6. Collectively batting .340, the team is hoping their bats stay hot heading into conference play with their first conference game coming up against Fullerton on March 3rd.
The Cypress softball team, who has won 9 state championships and 5 straight OEC conference championships, is off to a start that every team hopes for. Undefeated in their first 6 games and with 5 hitters batting over .600, they look to be primed for another successful conference title defense.
Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams started their seasons back in November. The women’s basketball team, led by players Jessica Barrow and Pressila Blanco, with a record of 21-5 (10-2 OEC) are looking to head into the postseason with the momentum that could result from a victory over conference leader Irvine Valley.
The men’s team sits at 15-12 (6-9 OEC) with one game remaining in the season. With a victory in their latest game against Irvine Valley, they will be hoping to end the season on a strong note on Golden West’s court on February 21st.
The men’s golf squad has started their campaign strong, earning 2nd in the Pt. Conception Tournament and 1st in both the OEC Tee-Off Classic and the Eagle Golf Classic with Luke Bartram and Matt Wotherspoon being the standouts.
The women’s tennis team is off to a slow start, only winning 1 of their first 4 matches. They will be hoping to turn the season around with conference play starting on February 20th against Orange Coast.
The women’s beach volleyball team played their first 2 competitive matches in Santa Ana, where they beat host Santa Ana College but fell against Ventura to split their start to their season. The first matches they will host on the Cypress campus will be on Friday March 6th against Fullerton at 10 AM and then Grossmont at 12 PM.
