On Thursday, May 1st, our very own Ed Girardina, Media Arts Design Professor, and our Media Arts Design adjunct professor Nadia Afghani achieved the coveted artistic notoriety on the front page of the New York Times. They are featured in an article entitled “The Rise of the Drone Master: Pop Culture recasts Obama.”
Girardina and Afghani recently did a sculpture of a MQ-1B Predator drone replicated out of mud. The reason for the replica drone was to propose a model as a “possible act of resistance to the authoritarian machinery” of the drones. The controversy and danger of the drones are discussed in this article.
Ed and Nadia also worked on a piece called “We Will Show You Fear In A Handful of Dust” in early March. You can see the model sculpture at Occidental College in Los Angeles and read the featured article above.
Below is a photo of the drone that Giradina and Afghani used as a model for their sculpture.
