Erik: A reminder of how bad comic book movies used to be
I love comic-book movies, so I basically see every one that comes out, good or bad. With that in mind, I put this movie near the bottom of my list–right next to Daredevil and X-Men 3. The problem is that by the time The Amazing Spider-Man 2 reaches its finale, the action has become so polished and joyless that you just want it to be over with. I felt myself getting frustrated over everything from the poorly timed music (silly comedy music during Electro’s big reveal scene?) to the lack of character development (Harry hasn’t seen Peter in almost a decade, and yet they’re best friends?), and became exhausted by the time the two and a half hour movie ended. This was obviously intended to be a crowd pleasing action CGI spectacle, laced with some fan-servicing moments and peppered with franchise bait. Marc Webb did his best with his star actors, but seemed to forget the rest of the movie plot in general. Or perhaps he was just bored with it, and ignored it–I know I did.
