The Asian Pacific Islander Desi American Resource Center posted a “Non-Public Space” sign outside the room, and campus security posted it in some campus offices, raising curiosity from students.
APIDA Resource Center coordinator, Joey Quenga, explained the meaning and purpose of the sign.
According to Quenga, a nonpublic space is an area that can be accessed only by authorized individuals, including registered students, faculty, staff, and other approved personnel. Individuals who are not authorized are not permitted to enter these areas.
When asked where students should go if they encounter officers, “students should contact Campus Safety immediately,” Quenga said.
Consequences for entering a nonpublic space without permission are determined by campus administration.
The college also has an established protocol if immigration enforcement officers appear on campus. For faculty and staff, the first step is to contact Campus Safety. The next step is to notify their immediate supervisors.
“The district and campus administration developed the plan and have provided training sessions for faculty and staff outlining the procedures to follow,” Quenga said.
The signs may appear in areas such as affinity group spaces and resource centers, including the APIDA Resource Center and the Pride Center. The policy is newly implemented, and additional signs are expected to appear across campus.
The wording “Non-Public Space” is intended to be clear and concise, was drafted by the communications team and reviewed by campus administration, according to Quenga.
“The signage should help clarify who is authorized to access specific campus spaces,” Quenga said.
Administrators have introduced the plan and provided multiple training opportunities so faculty and staff understand the protocol, and it has helped ensure campus safety and awareness of these procedures, according to Quenga.
Students who need assistance are encouraged to contact Campus Safety, located in the Business Building, Building 9, first floor, near Lot 1, or call 714-484-7387.
