Motor vehicle thefts at Cypress College increased 26.67% over the last three years, according to the 2026 Annual Crime and Safety Report released by the Office of Campus Safety on Thursday, Oct. 1. The report also highlighted a decrease in cases of fondling, while assault, burglary and robbery remained isolated incidents.
Enacted by Congress in 1990, the Campus Security Act was implemented as federal law on account of Howard and Connie Clery, the parents of Jeanne, who was murdered at Lehigh University in 1986. For all public and private post-secondary educational institutions that are a part of the federal student aid program, they must release an annual Clery Report that comprises campus crime and safety policies.
In respect to the federal requirement, Cypress College must account for all incidents pertinent to the Jeanne Clery Act every school year. The report includes all campus crime statistics, security guidelines and emergency contacts. It is published for students, faculty and the general public.
This year’s Clery Report shows 19 vehicle theft cases, reflecting an increase of four crimes compared to 15 in 2023. According to the report, 15 out of the 19 vehicle theft cases did not involve cars, but rather motorized electric bicycles, scooters and even skateboards.
While last year’s Clery report listed all emergency phones as operational across campus interiors and exteriors, there are only two exterior phones active now. In total, of the 35 emergency phones installed between parking structures and campus walkways, only 18 are currently operational.
The Department of Campus Safety logged criminality and alleged misconduct reported around campus this year. A daily campus crime log tracks the locations, dates, times of all reported cases. The Campus Safety office showcases this information during business hours on public display.
Data from last year showed only one arrest on campus, a liquor violation that happened while no weapon and drug arrests occurred. Six incidents took place in weekend community events open to the public, and a singular arrest on public campus grounds. There were three total referrals for disciplinary action; of the three cases two were for drug violations and one was for liquor.
Under the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) section of the Clery Report, there was one case of dating violence and two cases of stalking. Additionally, there was a decline in sexual offenses, with only one report of fondling in 2025 compared to 2024.
Within national origin in 2024 and 2025, there was one documented hate crime under the act of destruction of property that occurred on campus.
All statistics shown in the Clery Report must be in a three calendar year analysis, while sharing safety measures ensured on campus. Categories shown in the report are criminal offenses, arrests, VAWA offenses and referrals for disciplinary action.
Cypress College is highly committed to provide a safe environment where students, faculty and visitors can feel secure on campus. By annually disclosing the Clery Report, Campus Safety is dedicated to informing the public of critical statistics regarding campus crime to address risks and their steps to ultimately prevent future incidents.
To become less of a target for campus crime, students can take cautious measures by ensuring to lock their vehicles, be aware of their surroundings and guard their personal belongings. For additional tips, more can be read on page 51 in the Clery Report.
