Cyress College’s Fashion Club will debut its first fashion show, IDENTITY: Woven Narratives, on Thursday, May 8, at 6 p.m. in the Cypress College Art Gallery.
The Cypress College Fashion Club organized the show in collaboration with the Spanish Club, Asian Pacific Islander Desi American Club, Black Student Association, Queer-Straight Alliance, Media Art Design, and the Cypress College Art Gallery. The show’s primary goal is to explore how personal and cultural identities shape fashion while honoring the lived experiences of underrepresented communities.
The show was created to explore the personal and cultural identities that shape the fashion community while they wore the lived experiences of underrepresented communities.
“It was important [to the Fashion club] to include designers of color…we want to highlight the people of color in the industry because sometimes they don’t get that recognition that they deserve,” said Nataly Gijon-Garcia, Vice President of the Fashion Club
Inclusivity and introducing the world of fashion to campus were essential to the club because Cypress does not offer fashion courses.
Garcia stated, “We [as a club] want to open the door for fashion at Cypress College because it’s never been done. It would be a great leeway for future students to start more fashion clubs and get the courage to have Cypress finally have a fashion program on campus because fashion is an art form.”
The evening will also include the Student Photo and Art Exhibition, a collaboration between the college’s Photo and Art Departments. This exhibition will provide attendees with an immersive experience at the intersection of visual art and fashion.
The event is free and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to come early to enjoy food, meet local artists and vendors, and fully experience this dynamic, student-led showcase.
