Sole Image, the English department’s creative arts journal, will accept submissions from Cypress College students until June 13.
Every year, Cypress College students and the Creative Guild Club collaborate to design and produce Sole Image, a creative journal with prose, poetry, music, visual arts, and other artistic media.
The Creative Guild, co-advised by Ashton Politanoff and Nora Simoes, is a student-run club that brings together students interested in writing, poetry, and other art forms. The club meets once a week to share pieces, collaborate on work, and receive feedback.
Sole Image is an opportunity for all students at Cypress, not just the Creative Guild, to get their work published and viewed by fellow students. “What’s unique about Sole Image is that we try to foster talent from within, in terms of we only accept submissions from current Cypress College students,” said Politanoff.
If students are interested in submitting, the form to submit is available at https://soleimagecc.com/. Artists must abide by certain rules, such as ensuring that all submitted pieces are original and follow the college’s policies. Before submitting, Politanoff suggests reading through the journal and guidelines carefully. Submissions that do not follow submission rules will not be published.
Each art form has different guidelines. The guidelines for prose can include fiction, creative nonfiction, or a novel excerpt. On the other hand, novel excerpt submissions must be able to stand on their own. Word count should be less than 3,000 words and uploaded as a .doc file only. Students can submit up to three pieces for this genre.
Submitted poetry can be a sonnet, freestyle, or an elegy. Artists can submit up to five pieces for this genre, but all pieces must be submitted in the same document and not surpass a word count of 3,000 words.
For music, both music and lyrics must be original, and collaborations with multiple artists must be with Cypress College students only. Only one project can be uploaded for this genre.
For visual arts, which includes photography, paintings, drawings, digital art, and images of self-produced art, up to three pieces can be uploaded for this genre. Pieces must have no movement, so no videos, GIFs, or motions.
All pieces must be uploaded by June 13 at midnight.
The journal’s published pieces are decided through a vote by the student editors in Sole Image. “Through the voting process, we determine what is accepted and what might need some work,” said Politanoff.
