Cypress College’s Fall Jazz Band Concert is set to showcase a dynamic blend of jazz, funk, rock and blues, led by Professor Gary Gopar, the director of the Jazz Band. This semester, approximately 19 student musicians will take the stage, joined by an alumni vocalist who will appear in several featured pieces.
The concert program features a wide range of musical styles. Audiences can expect classic jazz standards from the 1950s, the energetic “Zoot Suit Riot” performed by the full band, and Lenny Kravitz’s “Always on the Run,” which will highlight the guest vocalist. A holiday piece may also be included, depending on final preparations.
The event is open to the public. Ticket prices are expected to be $7 for students and seniors, $10 general admission, and free for children under 12. The concert will also feature a few graduating students who have been part of the band for years, making this performance a meaningful finale to their time at Cypress College.
Gopar explained that preparing the concert is a detailed process built on his extensive experience of over 25 years organizing performances and 11 years teaching full-time at the college.
Throughout the semester, students rehearse nearly 30 pieces before narrowing the selection to the final eight songs. The song choices come from both Gopar and the students, who exchange playlists, YouTube links, and musical ideas until they craft a well-rounded program.
Gopar noted the biggest challenge is ensuring everyone arrives on time, dressed correctly and ready for the dress rehearsal during the first week of December. After 13 weeks of practice, the Jazz Band is prepared to deliver a memorable and high-energy performance for the community.
