Cypress College Dance Department will present the Celebration of Dance, directed by Maha Afra. Dance students’ performances will include many types of dance, including modern, contemporary and swing.
This showcase of dance is a place for the dancers to express themselves and their creativity through multiple types of dance. The versatility of their performances demonstrates what dance is about: freedom of self-expression.
“Dance is the ability to express yourself,” said Julie Dubois, a dance student who will be performing contemporary, modern, and Afro jazz dances. “It inspired me to want to expand my creativity.”
Dance also allows the students to find a place to belong and gain joy from the art form. A group effort can encourage dancers to support not only themselves but each other.
“My friends got me into it, and it sounded fun,” said Lucy Schleper, who will be performing modern and swing dances. “I like being a part of something.”
Dance student Thao Le, who will be performing modern dance, shares her advice for students who are worried about beginning dancing: “Do it scared,” said Le. “I was so scared when I entered my first class, but do it scared. You can see yourself grow.”
Dance could be seen as intimidating by many, as it involves putting yourself out there and allowing an audience to see you, your emotions and your creativity being channeled throughout the dance. Allowing yourself to dance and depict emotion in various ways helps with overcoming vulnerability. It allows you to fully embrace your creativity and express yourself.
Celebration of Dance will be taking place in the Campus Theatre on Nov. 21-22 at 7 p.m., and Nov. 23 at 4 p.m. Admission includes $12 for children (0-12), seniors (55+), students, and $15 for general admission. Tickets can be purchased at the box office before the performance.
