The Cypress Chargers men’s soccer team is looking to continue its strong playoff run after finishing second in the Orange Empire Conference. With a 14-3-5 overall record, the Chargers prove why they are one of the strongest defensive teams in the region.
The Chargers kicked off the Southern California Regional playoffs with a 1-0 victory over the Palomar Comets. Team captain Alex Gomez Jr. scored a goal late in the first half, which secured the win for Cypress. The team withstood strong defensive pressure throughout the second half, despite constant pressure from Palomar. The victory marked the Chargers’ sixth shutout win of the season, showcasing the team’s ability to stay composed under pressure.
After the match, Gomez reflected on the significance of the victory, crediting the hard work his team put in, “It didn’t feel real. We’ve all worked hard all summer, all season for this,” Gomez said in an interview with Charger Sports Network. “It’s been a blessing, and it’s not just me. The whole team put in the effort, so I’m grateful for them, and we just keep working hard until Saturday.”
The Chargers have relied on their strong defensive play throughout the season, conceding few goals and shutting down rivals. Their current six-game winning streak has shaped their playoff push. In the final weeks of conference play, the Chargers had multiple shutouts and close games, which gives them a more favorable spot in playoff rankings. Cypress earned a No. 15 seed and secured home-field advantage for the first game of the SoCal Regional playoffs.
In addition to their team success, several Chargers received significant individual recognition across the OEC. Defender Jesse Gonzalez was named OEC Defensive Player of the Year after contributing to Cypress’s dominating defensive play. Players Dominick Resendiz, Issac Morales, and Joaquin Araneda were recognized in the All-OEC First Team. Additionally, Alex Gomez Jr., Erik Hernandez, and Jacob De La Rose earned All OEC Second Team.
The Chargers now turn their focus on the next matchup against Oxnard College on Saturday, Nov. 22, at 1 p.m. Oxnard will host the game after earning the No. 2 seed and finishing first in the Western State North Conference. For the Chargers, maintaining their strong defensive play will continue to be key, along with maintaining the composure they’ve shown throughout the season.
With their sights set on for victory on Saturday and an opportunity to extend their season and keep their postseason hopes alive as they look to cause a major upset in the region.
