The Cypress Chargers Golf team has found early success in the season, finishing in the top three in their last three tournaments as they sit in third place in the Orange Empire Conference.
The Chargers aim to improve last season, where they advanced to the State Championships and finished eighth. Most recently, the team placed third in the Cypress Conference match on March 10.
According to head coach Brad Pickler, he said that sophomores Vincent Quintero, Grant Muhlenbruch, and Alex Mascaro have stood out with their performances and are bright spots for the team. Freshman James Luther has also made an impact on the team’s performance, as stated by Pickler.
Pickler has been impressed with the team so far, but noted that “we’re not as good as last year, but we’re just trying to get back to the State Championship.” He says his goal for the season is to “make it to the State Regionals, advance to the State Championship, and become champions.”
When asked about what he appreciates most about his team, Picker said, “I like the chemistry…we work hard, compete hard, and hope that we can go far”. He added that he wants his players to “continue to be bought in, and to stay focused on the end goal.”
Pickler mentions that the team’s weakness is their consistency, wanting the guys to continue to perform at a high level. When asked how he keeps the team motivated and engaged, he said, “We say we’re good enough, but we have to perform, continue to motivate them, and talent-wise, we can compete”.
The Chargers golf team is set to compete in tournaments at Victor Valley on Monday, March 24, at a time yet to be determined, and in Riverside on Monday, March 31, at 8:30 a.m.
