The No. 7 ranked Cypress College baseball team is starting strong with a 5-1 record in the Orange Empire Conference so far in the season.
The team recently won two out of three games against Fullerton College and swept the series against Saddleback College. They’ve won three out of their last four games as they head up north to play in the Spring Classic Tournament.
“The goal of the season is to win the conference and to keep winning series against our conference opponents,” said Cypress College Athletic Director, Wes McCurtis. He also noted they have a competitive team every year: “We’ve developed a good reputation as a school, so the expectations are always very high for us.”
The team’s early success in the season gives the players a higher acceptance rate for transferring to a four-year university. McCurtis said, “The good thing about this program is that we have a 97% transfer rate for the baseball team.” Twenty-eight Cypress baseball players have played in the major leagues, making it the program with the most in the state. This gives athletes the experience to compete at a higher level.
Cypress is set to face Cuesta College in the Spring Classic Tournament on Wednesday, March 19 at 2 p.m. They will then play East Los Angeles on Thursday, March 20 at noon at Ernest Righetti High School, then Fresno City College on Friday, March 21 at 11 a.m. at Allan Hancock College.
