The Cypress College baseball team has clinched a share of the state championship title after dominating the regular season with an 11-game winning streak.
The team swept Irvine Valley, Santa Ana, and Orange Coast College, starting on March 27 through April 19.
The Chargers are led by eighth-year Head Coach Anthony Hutting, who has helped guide the team to their current overall record of 30-7 and 16-2 in conference play.
The team continued to work through their losses, ultimately leading to a successful end to the regular season over the weekend, sweeping Orange Coast College.
After losing last season in the first round of the California Community College Athletic Association (3C2A) SoCal Regionals against LA Valley College, the team is determined to go all the way in their playoff run. The last time Cypress brought home the State Championship was in 2013.
With playoffs approaching, the team is determined and has great chemistry. They are dominating defensively, committing the fewest errors in the conference and turning 32 double plays through 35 games, a statistic that makes them a threat to other schools, showing discipline and infield communication.
Offensively, Freshman Justin Tiller had a standout season. Batting third in the lineup, the left-hander has recorded 53 hits and 17 home runs. The Chargers have also seen consistent production from veterans and young talent, creating a balanced lineup.
The Chargers will wrap up the regular season this week with a home series against Orange Coast College. To win the state championship, a strong finish could secure the Chargers a top seed in the regional playoffs, which will begin May 3.
