Cypress College’s Theater and Dance Departments present the musical Big River, based on Mark Twain’s classic novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Directed by Arthur Ross, the cast includes Huckleberry Finn played by Daniel Rees McDonald and a runaway slave, Jim, played by Brandon Burks.
“We’re all worked really hard,” said McDonald, “Big River can be seen as hick or as a country musical but the show has depth, it’s honest and sheds light on a lot of dark issues from the 1800s. I’m very proud that we can share these truths with an audience.”
The musical follows Huck and Fin’s adventure up the Mississippi River but even more importantly the audience is able to follow them as a meaningful and deep friendship develops between them.
“There’s six weeks from the first rehearsal to opening night,” explains Chuck Rogers, theater production coordinator. While Rogers oversees and coordinates all aspects of physical production of the musical, “Ross is the pulse of the show,” says Rogers.
“We’re all very excited about tomorrow!” says Ross. of the opening night March 7.
The musical is being shown in the campus theater March 7, 8, 14, and 15 at 8 pm, as well as March 9 and 16 at 4 pm. General admission is $20. Tickets for seniors, students with school ID, and children under 12 are $15
