The Cypress College women’s soccer team fought to a 0-0 draw against Santiago Canyon College on Friday, Oct. 16, despite continuously pressuring its opponent’s defense.
Playing on their home field, the Chargers faced an undefeated Santiago Canyon team that refused to give up a goal. Throughout the match, Cypress continued creating scoring opportunities, including several corner kicks, but struggled to get past Santiago Canyon’s tight defense.
“We will pay a little bit more attention to set pieces. I think we had about six or seven corners that we didn’t finish, and a lot of long throws, so we got to definitely have to be better there. We will go over some final third finishing tactics,” said Coach Randi Martinez.
When asked about how the team managed to keep it tied 0-0 the whole time, Sophomore Layla Valle said that winning the first and second ball and effort contributed to their defensive place. The Chargers remained persistent, pushing forward and looking for an opening.
However, Santiago Canyon held its ground, preventing Cypress from turning those opportunities into goals. “Compared to like the other defenses, yeah they are probably better…usually the other defenses are just like really aggressive, but they were kind of like smarter,” said Valle when asked about Santiago’s defense.
“1st half we were doing good and then they caught on 2nd half,” said Sophomore Joey Duong. Despite the scoreless finish, Cypress persisted against one of the Orange Empire Conference’s strongest teams. The draw allowed both teams to continue their unbeaten runs in conference play.
