For one weekend only, the Theater and Dance department present People In Motion, a showcase of dance from around the world opening tonight and continuing Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 4 p.m. at the Cypress College Theater.
People In Motion is a dance production that star students and guest artists performing pieces such as jazz, contemporary, modern, hip hop, and other worldly styles including Afro, Samba, Afro Brazilian, and Clogging. “This show is something you do not want to miss. It’s colorful, it’s powerful, it’s joyful, and it’s a breath of fresh air” said Stage Manager, Christine DePalmo. The dynamic of the show and the talent of its cast and crew “create a show that you can never see anywhere else” said dancer, Minerva Trajano.
The dancers began the process with a tough round of auditions back in early February. Since then, all of the dancers, choreographers, designers, and directors have put in countless hours to rehearse and create a show that will “paint every type of picture that will capture your soul” said dancer Monica Vargas. After 13 weeks of rehearsals and one week of technical and dress rehearsals, the entire cast and crew come together for one weekend of production.
“You can never understand just how close we get. We become a family for a semester and sometimes for a couple years and more” said Trajano. Bringing a cast of almost 40 dancers together takes dedication and a passion for dance. DePalmo said, “These dancers have worked their toes, legs, arms, and brains off and they want to share their story with you.”
The talent that goes into making People In Motion so enjoyable to watch is undeniable. “It’s not a show without all the performers, theater crew, amazing choreographers, awesome costume designers, a lighting magician, and one truly amazing dance director” said Trajano. There are 11 total pieces in the production choreographed by guest artists, students, and professional choreographers.
