May 4th, or also known as “May the 4th Be With You” is a special day for Star Wars fans as it is a day to celebrate all things Star Wars.
This unofficial holiday that fans celebrate came to be because of the phrase, “May The Force Be With You” which is a dialogue in “Star Wars: A New Hope,” the first in a total of twelve films in the saga.
The first film was released in 1977 and the first use of the phrase came from the UK Conservative Party in a paid advertisement in the newspaper which said, “May the Fourth Be With You, Maggie. Congratulations,” as it was used to celebrate an election victory. Since then, fans worldwide have caught onto the phrase.
Fans all around the world show their appreciation and love for the Star Wars Saga on the internet as #MayThe4thBeWithYou takes over social media, as they post their fan art, memorabilia, and even photos of themselves in their Star Wars gear.
As this year marks 45 years since the release of the original film, the Star Wars franchise continues to grow and seems as though it is as big as it’s ever been. Disney has released multiple original Star Wars series within the last few years such as “The Mandalorian”, “The Bad Batch”, and “The Book of Boba Fett”.
Fans have plenty more to be excited for as Disney has many more projects in development, including the highly anticipated “Obi-Wan Kenobi” series that will begin streaming later this month on May 27th, exclusively on Disney+.
To fans, May the 4th is a representation of more than just a film or a quote from a movie, it represents how much Star Wars is a part of their lives, as they show gratitude to one of the most beloved and successful franchises of all time.
