It’s that time of the year when Christmas music is the only thing you hear in stores. If that’s the music I’m going to be listening to for the rest of the month, I think it’s time to rank the most iconic songs, as well as the songs that should never be played again.
As a loyal Spotify user, I’ve listened to the annual “Christmas Hits” playlist that has over 5 million saves, with songs like “All I Want for Christmas Is You” by Mariah Carey and “Last Christmas” by Wham!
If I had to pick a favorite Christmas song/album, it would have to be Justin Bieber’s Under The Mistletoe. It just has a nostalgic feel to it. Whenever I feel like reminiscing childhood memories or wanting to return to 2010 to feel like a kid again, I know that album has my back!
Another one is Michael Buble; he is the king of Christmas. A hit like “It’s Beginning To Look Like Christmas” is the second most played song during the Christmas season. It’s second because no one can pass the queen Mariah! Buble has a voice that puts you in the Christmas spirit anytime he is played on the radio.
One of my favorite songs that make me happy is “Feliz Navidad” by Jose Feliciano. This song was made for my gente Latinos and the special traditions we have as a community. Every time it’s played, it makes my little heart sing, and it reminds me of times with my family.
I have mentioned the best songs, so now let’s talk about the worst songs. They are not necessarily the worst songs, but they don’t give off the same vibe as the other ones.
“Twelve Days of Christmas” by Bing Crosby isn’t the best song. You can argue with me as much as you want, but this is not a good song. It just gets repetitive and repetitive; We get that the song emphasizes how “your true love” gives you things, but it’s not that special!
Another song that I don’t think gives Christmas vibes is “I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas” by Gayla Peevey. This song is just weird–that’s my explanation.
Some underrated classics would have to be Sabrina Carpenter’s Christmas album Fruitcake. This album is a hit for the Christmas season; I love how she put her own spin on it. She also remixed her song “Nonsense” by making a Christmas version. She’s also having her own Christmas special hosted on Netflix on Dec. 6, 2024, at 6 p.m., so make sure to check it out!
The 2024 Christmas season has just begun, and it’s time to get in the spirit of it. The past month was rough for some, but it’s time to “Let it Go” and spend time with family. Happy holidays everyone!
