With classes back in session at Cypress College, that means sports season is also underway with multiple teams on campus starting up their season.
Soccer for the men kicked off their season on August 27 in a 1-1 tie against Taft. They are currently sitting at 2-1-1 on the season and are coming off a 3-1 loss to Long Beach City College. They will now host El Camino College at home on Tuesday, September 10 at 3:00 P.M.
They will look to improve on their previous season where they finished with a record of 8-9-4, with a conference record of 6-5-3. They were also unable to make the playoffs last season.
The women’s soccer team started their season on August 23 in a win against San Diego Miramar. They currently have a record of 5-0 and are coming off a 6-1 victory against West Valley College. Their next game will take place on September 18 against Long Beach City College at 3:00 P.M. The women’s soccer team was one of the stronger teams in the state last year with a 19-4-3 overall record and a 10-3-1 conference record.
They made it to the championship final last season but lost to Folsom Lake 5-4 in the shootout after a 1-1 tie in regulation. They will look to rebound and take home the title this season.
The men’s water polo team started off their season on Friday, Sept. 6 in a doubleheader. They went 3-1 in their four matches. They will now host Riverside College on September 11 at 4:15 P.M. They are coming off a season in which they finished 14-13 and ended with a 2-6 conference record.
Women’s water polo also started the season on Sept. 6 with a doubleheader. They went 2-1 in their three matches over the weekend. They will also play Riverside College on September 11 at 3:00 P.M. start time. Just like the men’s water polo team, they also went 14-13 on the season last year with a 1-7 conference record. They lost the battle for third place in the conference against Orange Coast College.
It’s been a struggle early on for the women’s volleyball team, they are currently sitting at 2-7 to start off the season. They just picked up their first two wins of the season on Friday as they beat San Diego Marimar, 3-0 and then beat East Los Angeles College On September 7, 3-1. The team will now host Compton College on September 13 at 6:00 P.M. They played well last year, as they ended the regular season with a 19-7 record and an 11-5 record in conference play.
With new players coming in and some going out, these are the sports teams on campus that will look to make an impact this season. As the teams adjust to their new teammates and learn the habits of opponents, they can start utilizing their teamwork to help achieve what they want for the season.
