As the regular season comes to an end, the Cypress College softball team is putting up impressive numbers. With an overall 32-6 game standing and a two win streak, the Lady Chargers are on their way to an exciting playoff season.
At their last home game against rival school Fullerton College on, Wed. April 19, Cypress College President JoAnna Schilling threw out the honorary first pitch. The game started strong, the stands were filled with support for both teams and around the 2nd inning free hot dogs, chips, and beverages were being given out as supplies lasted.
The audience’s energy remained high, with 80 people in attendance. The support for the Chargers was high and the team remained upbeat the whole game, even the Cypress baseball team made their way over to watch and enjoy the ambiance after their practice.
Starting pitcher, Emily Rush shined bright on the mound keeping Fullerton without a single hit during her first 4.1 innings pitched. Her presence at the plate was crucial to the final score, Rush hit a two RBI double helping her team regain the lead for Cypress bringing home Cameron Curiel and Lizbeth Gomez.
Rush’s 1.49 ERA dominated the Fullerton College Hornets, pitching the entirety of the game and only allowing one run through seven innings. Second baseman Camryn Addimando, went 1-2 putting the Chargers on the scoreboard in first inning. After a tie up in the fifth, the Lady Chargers fought back, regaining the lead in the sixth inning and finishing the game with a final score of three to one.
As their final conference game approaches, the Lady Chargers remain the team to watch. They’re currently sitting in the first place spot in the Orange Empire Conference, and have a three game winning streak. After sweeping Golden West College on Wed. April 26, Cypress ended their regular season in first place. Pushing them forward into the 3C2A playoffs with confidence.
Announced later that evening, six of the Lady Chargers earned OEC Honors and the coaching staff received Staff of the Year. As they make their way through the playoffs, this group of young athletes have a significant chance at going all the way through by continuously showing their power and proving they are the team to look out for.
