Cypress College Associated Students, also known as A.S., hosted their annual Winter Fest on Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2024, in front of the Student Life and Leadership building. This year was the A.S.’s fourth year hosting this event for students on campus. The first Winter Fest was hosted in 2021.
The event started at 5 p.m and throughout the event, students participated in activities including karaoke, snow globe making, cookie/ornament decorating, and an ugly sweater contest. The winner of the contest received a gift card. They also provided free food, like sandwiches, hot cocoa, cookies, and other desserts.
Songs students sang for karaoke were “Last Christmas” by Wham!, “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town” by Eddy Arnold, and many others. During Winter Fest students had the opportunity to take pictures in a photo backdrop that was located behind the Financial aid building.
A.S. conducts events like these all year round as a way to help students destress from their courseload, learn more about the activities on campus, and meet new people. “I think it’s a good time for holiday cheer, it’s also very stressful since finals are coming up. We just want to provide opportunities for students to alleviate that stress and also celebrate the holiday cheer,” said Dev Raja, Senator of Associated Students.
Events like these are beneficial to students as they navigate their time here on campus, they provide opportunities to interact with their student representatives.
Winter Fest is especially beneficial as it takes place one week before finals, “[It’s] a nice end of semester celebration where we can all come together,” said Gianna Garza Senator of the Associated Students.
Kyle Hsu, a business administration major, said that he appreciates events like this on campus, especially since Cypress is a commuter campus. Leo Eugenio agreed, “It’s important [because] it’s a way to make friends and [expand] your circle.”
Associated Students understand their role in making the campus a place for students to grow socially, especially during the winter season.
