The Cypress College women’s tennis team is undergoing growing pains in what seems to be a rebuilding season, but they remain optimistic about finishing strong.
“Right now, the season is proving to be more challenging than anticipated. While we’ve encountered some issues along the way, we’ve managed to assemble a team and truly enjoy our time off the court, which I believe will contribute to our strength for next year,” said Head Coach Ben Cook.
The team consists of four freshmen and one returning sophomore from last year’s squad, compared to the previous year’s roster, which had ten freshmen and one returning sophomore, totaling 11 players. This year, however, the team has just five players.
Cook said, “A number of our freshmen are showing promise, particularly considering that some haven’t played competitive tennis in quite some time. The progress we’ve witnessed in just a few months, with these girls earning more competitive points in matches, is a positive sign for us.”
With an overall record of 0-9, matching their conference record, the women’s tennis team has suffered defeat in every match this season. Out of the seven matches played, they have only won one out of 79 matches.
Upon assuming the role, Cook hadn’t foreseen a complete reconstruction phase, yet it has unmistakably materialized as such. The goal now is to unlock the team’s highest potential in preparation for the forthcoming season.
Despite the team’s relative inexperience compared to others, they are rapidly narrowing the gap. They are showcasing competitiveness in every contest, and refining their skills with each outing. With the addition of more members to the team, the potential for collective achievement is attainable.
When asked about expectations for the next season, Cook said, “We’re focused on refining our fundamentals and strategizing better for the upcoming season. With the addition of new players next year or in subsequent years, our progress will undoubtedly accelerate.”
Cook elaborated on his vision for his tenure as head coach of the women’s tennis team.
“The transition from one year to the next will be smoother, and the team will grow stronger. Our aim is to establish a supportive system where experienced players assist newcomers.”
As of their recent match, which took place on Apr. 2 at Orange Coast College, the women’s team lost 0-9. The team finishes the season with a record of 0 wins and 9 losses.
