Cypress College defeats Irvine Valley College 7-0.
The Chargers were trying to recover after suffering their first loss of the season against Saddleback College last week.
After a successful victory, Erick Hurtartes’ team stands in third place of the Orange Empire Conference with a record of 6-1-1.
Right off the bat with 49 seconds into the game, the Chargers had their first opportunity of the game after sophomore midfielder Christine Duarte made her way to the Lasers box but her hot attempt was denied by freshman goalkeeper Andrea Gonzales, showing a preview of what was to come.
In the 13th minute of the game, Cypress went up in the scoreboard following sophomore defender Presli Dillons’ stunning shot from the right side, surpassing Gonzales, putting the Chargers up 1-0.
Freshman forward Abigail Morales had a chance to increase the Chargers lead, after receiving an amazing through ball from sophomore defender Jassmin Ortiz, but was blocked by Gonzales.
The Chargers scored back-to-back goals in the 32nd and 33rd minute of the game after freshman forward Carisia Raygoza and Dillon both dribbled their way to Lasers box and easily scored past Gonzales, making it 3-0 in the first half. Raygoza would go on to score her second goal of the season, while Dillon would score her third, and second of the game.
Cypress had a dominating first half, shooting 13 times to goal and would go into halftime with a three goal lead..
In the second half, the Chargers started out even stronger and with 45 into the second half, Morales was able to get past the Lasers defense and make her way to the inside of the box and deliver a left footed shot that put the ball beyond Gonzales’ reach, putting Cypress up 4-0.
Five minutes later in the 50th minute of the second half, the Chargers added their fifth goal of the game after sophomore forward Alyssa Villalobos was able to combine with Duarte on a give and go sequence leaving Villalobos going one-on-one against Gonzales and the Chargers forward was able to strike her fifth goal of the season.
Cypress showed no signs of lifting their foot of the gas, and two minutes later, Dillon set up Raygoza with a fantastic through ball in the air where the Chargers forward was able to control the ball and go around Gonzales and tap the ball in for the sixth goal of the game.
In the 72th minute of the game, freshman forward Melanie Hernandez added herself to the scoresheet for her seventh goal of the season after an inside the box pass by freshman midfielder Sophia Chavez that left Hernandez alone in front of the goal for the Chargers seventh goal of the day.
