The library and Learning Resource Center’s hours have recently changed on campus, which has received some backlash amongst some students.
This spring semester, the library is closed Friday through Sunday and the LRC is only available online on Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The hours for the library are currently 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday and 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday. The library does offer hours online from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Fridays and from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays. The LRC is open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. in person Monday through Thursday.
Fullerton College, Cypress’ sister school, opens the library on Fridays and Saturdays. Their hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, and are open on Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
After reaching out to the Dean of the Library Dr. Treisa Cassens via email in regards to the new hours, she said that it was from watching enrollments in classes from the fall to the spring semester. She also noted that it’s a response to students who wanted a place to study after the 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. campus hours.
According to previous articles done by the Cypress Chronicle regarding the differences between the schools, Fullerton College’s services have been a major contributor to the changes made on Cypress’ campus in recent years. This includes several major changes to the Charger Food Pass. The only way a student from Cypress can experience the difference is if they are dual-enrolled at both schools.
After speaking with Fullerton College’s text hotline, students who are not dual-enrolled are allowed to physically access the library itself for simple studying needs, like using computers and printing services. However, they can not check out any reserve desk items, which include textbooks and study guides, and do not have access to reserve a study room.
Students at Cypress College do not have a library or LRC hotline to access quick help with any research either. Nor does Cypress College’s library have a website dedicated to providing students with extensive research tools like “Ask a Librarian,” or “Book a Librarian,” as well as different programs and workshops.
Fernando Valencia, a theater arts major, said, “It’s kind of a letdown, I mean, I’ve been coming to Cypress for so many years, and having that help on the weekends when I can.”
He continued, “[Friday] is the one day I don’t have class, it’s the one day I don’t have rehearsals and now that it’s closing…where do I go when I need help, like I can’t help myself when I need others.”
Another thing to note is that many of the students seemed unaware of the new library hours, as the school hasn’t advertised them enough.
