A projection mapping event called “Illuminated Visions” will be held at Cypress College on Thursday, April 18.
Media arts design professor Katalin Angelov, and media arts design assistant Abdul Meelar will hold the event in three locations: the wedge, the campanile, and the bookstore.
The family-friendly event, open to the public, is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. and conclude at 10:00 p.m. Parking will be free and pizza will be provided to attendees.
The dance department has been invited to perform before the show takes place.
Student artwork shown will include motion graphic design, also known as motion design. Motion design can be described as animated graphic design.
Angelov describes projection mapping as something that one would see at the Disneyland castle during a show.
Projection mapping involves projectors that must work the shape of architecture to map images. For example, at the campanile, Angelov and Meelar will not project the images flatley but will take into consideration their structure. The projection is limited to the space of a structure.
Along with Cypress College students, artists from around the world have been invited to participate in “Illuminated Visions.”
In order to not shorthand students, Angelov chose to project students’ artwork on the Cypress College bookstore building.
The event is being held for Angelov to record each artist’s work to be used in their portfolios.
“I think altogether, what we realized with our students as well, it’s so hard to break into that first show,” Angelov said. “So, we give the opportunity to everyone around the world to display their art on our beautiful buildings.”
Originally titled “Art Projections,” Angelov and Meelar created the projection mapping event in 2021. Meelar changed its name to “Illuminated Visions” this year as he was inspired by other projection mapping events. In an email, Angelov said she and Meelar wanted artists “to come up with a vision for the Wedge and the Tower [campanile].”
During its first year of production, Angelov said students were lacking connection due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“In 2021, When we came back to campus, we said ‘Okay, why don’t we do an event where everybody can just show their art to other people, and we just hang out together’,” Angelov stated.
One of Angelov’s goals for “Illuminated Visions” is to promote projection mapping to people. She said that people do not understand what projection mapping is, as she noted that her projection mapping classes would have about five or six students enrolled in it.
Angelov and Meelar will host “Illuminated Visions” to give artists an opportunity for them to promote their art.
