The Grammys are known for being a problematic award show with controversial decisions for nominees and winners. In early November, nominations for the 67th Grammys were announced, and fans–including myself–are disappointed with the picks of several categories.
The Recording Academy is a prestigious group of members who nominate and invite artists to the award show. Whoever is nominated is in the running for the best in that category.
This year’s nominations are not what I expected. Looking at the top three categories, which are Record, Album, and Song of the Year, it’s a mess. I don’t know who chooses the nominations, but all I know is that they do not have taste.
The major snub of the year was for pop princess Ariana Grande. She came out with her album Eternal Sunshine back in March, and I think it is her best album yet. The album is rumored to be about her divorce with Dalton Gomez, a realtor. With her raw emotions and her storytelling in her lyrics, I thought she had Album of the Year in the bag, but she wasn’t even nominated in those big three categories after providing hits like “Yes And,” “We Can’t Be Friends,” and “The Boy is Mine.”
Another snub was Dua Lipa. I was truly hurt by this one because she at least deserved one Grammy nomination for Best Dance Pop Recording–especially after the release of her hits “Training Season” and “Houdini.” Those songs had everyone dancing; her iconic dance break from the 2024 Grammys had everyone thinking she had that dance nomination, but she didn’t.
After all of these amazing songs came out this year, do you want me to believe that Taylor Swift was nominated for an average album that had average songs? This album did not hit like the others in the categories she was nominated for. I listened to The Tortured Poets Department for this article, and let me tell you, this album was not good at all. I feel that she has gotten to the point where her songs are repetitive, and you begin to lose interest in the album.
I will say that the Grammy’s did nominate some good music in their categories. Charli XCX getting nominated for her album BRAT was a staple this summer. Her iconic presence and dance hits gave us the iconic “BRAT Summer” and that will live on as the best summer ever.
Another great nomination was Chappel Roan. Although I don’t agree with a majority of the nominations, I will say that her getting Best New Artist after only being known this year is impressive
Now, we wait on who will take the trophy for best in their category, as the star-filled award show will air on Feb. 2, 2025.
