The Cypress College men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams are gearing up for the kickoff of their 2024 season. With less than a week until their second meet, the swim team is putting in the effort to ensure this season surpasses previous ones.
Head Coach Frisk Driscoll said, “We are aiming to be competitive at the conference level. Our goal is a top 4 finish for the girls’ team, and on both sides, we aim to qualify individuals for the championship league.”
Both the men’s and women’s swimming and dive teams at Cypress consist of smaller rosters than other schools in the division with only 5 five men and 5 five women
“The team has focused on maintaining consistent intensity during practices,” said Driscoll. ” While they were completing the workouts last year, they weren’t executing them at the high level needed. This year, there’s a better understanding of their purpose in practice, which translates to improved performance on meet days.” The team has eight freshmen and two sophomores. The two sophomores are on the girl’s side.
Driscoll made it known that the team is training hard and at a more fluent pace this year.
“The team had a rigorous January training session during the semester break,” he said. “They’ve been dedicating three hours each day, Monday through Friday, to workouts, along with an additional hour in the weight room. There have been significant improvements in strength and overall athleticism compared to last year.”
At their most recent swim meet, which took place on Feb. 3 at El Camino College, the women’s team secured third place with five participants, earning a total of 63 points. The men’s team placed sixth with only three swimmers present, garnering nine points. Overall, the men’s and women’s Swimming and Dive teams accumulated 72 points, finishing in 5th place.
Next up: The Cypress College Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving teams will compete at Saddleback College OEC meeting on Friday, March 1st. The time is to be determined.
